BEGINNING RUG HOOKER MATERIALS and SUPPLIES

Dear Beginning RUG Hooker!
The  fabric of  #1 CHOICE for RUG HOOKERS  in 2012 would be , what I call ''HOOKERS GOLD''
It is  100% Natural wool (dyed up in any colour) and  made by Dorr Wool
or any other company that has  100% wool in the simple weave of
right to left and
top to Bottom  . . parallel to the selvedge edge . ..
It is said that the 100% woolens are the sturdiest and will last the longest in
a rug for the floor.
Wool is less likely to collect lint or dust and go into those ugly balls  !

OLd clothing can be used  either in  100% pure wool or an 80/20 wool blends.
It is getting harder and harder to find these days ,the 100%  wool , even at Frenchies !
Well especially there ,as there are so many rug hookers in the Maritimes  using Frenchies as their main source of wool supply!

There are other  materials available !
As you have seen in my last post . . ..
Here are some photos of fabrics you can use to hook your rugs and have great results without having to empty the cookie jar money wise!
The Guatemala mats are all hooked with just such cottons as above . . .all you have to do is cut with scissors (no expensive cutters needed!) in the opposite direction to which the fabrics were knit!
TEE SHIRTS /DRESSES /SKIRTS  and even
SWEATERS  make a great material to hook with also!. . and . ..are probably in good supply around the house!
Wash them in hot water in the machine and they will felt a bit making them easier to hook up!
Any kind of jersey or rayon dress or skirt cut in 1/2 inch strips works well also!

Section of an antique rug above ,shows a fabric strip opened out after it was hooked and the rug under repairs!
To right I used some cut up panty hose to blend in colour wise .  .for the repair..  . .
nylons also curl when stretched out in strips so the loops look neat . . .well compared to the fabric loops to the left of this photo above.
