I have started my annual cleaning of rugs in the new clean snow that fell last night out in the garden . . .What a difference it makes!
It looks like there will be lots of snow falling out west so may I remind all those that can -to try this amazing old fashioned  excellent way to  freshen and clean your rugs!
This is the way our grandmothers and great grandmothers did it and it is so easy!

Just brush on the new fallen snow and brush it around . . .the dirt falls through to the underneath . . .the beauty of the cold crisp snow is that the rug doesn't get wet at all!
I have also stuck all my wool out in the freezer on the porch . . .just in case!. . . .72 hours in . should get anything that might  move!
Its -17 C- thats  OF I think! even on the porch!
RESULT a nice clean  geometric - an old fashioned rug . . . .made with a bowl!
those strange looking poles in the garden are  2 sculptures by my DH . . .  . . .One large and one small in colour . . . .

  1. good idea, the next snowfall I will clean mine too!

  2. What at idea,

I have a rug sitting beside the washing machine and I was wondering how I'm going to clean it without weakening the fabric.

Thank You for your help. Corinne

  3. hi Corinne!
I know that many people wash their rugs in the washing machine - I presume on hand wash cycle ? but I myself am terrified to do this . . .some even put them in the dryer . .the only mat I have ever seen in person washed in the machine came out in a mass of knots!!!!. . . and had to be thrown away . . . .so try the snow first! after a vacuum over and perhaps a new steaming!-SNOW does do a remaarkable job!

  4. You are amazing Judith !!! It brings me such joy to come to your website. I love your bears !!!

  5. THank YOU Nancy! for your great comment! Its always nice to know that one touches someone-especially on this cold winter say!

  6. Hello Judith,
I met you on the Front Porch. Googled your name and saw your great block of work there on your web page.. Your rugs are fabulous. I am just a beginner and just finished my 3rd large rug.
Right now i am doing an iris to learn shading.
Think I have to do some dip dyeing!! Never a dull moment..
I just now realized I have had you on my Blogroll for ages...
I thought this method of cleaning rugs was so interesting.... Our snow is all gone here in Southern Ontario, but I now know how to use the snow which I hate usually!!!! haha
    Thanks for your inspiration
